Ellen DeGeneres, the host of the popular talk-show, was born on 26 January 1958 in Metairie, Louisiana. Her birth name is Ellen Lee DeGeneres. When she was 16 her parents got divorced. Her mother married Roy Gruessendorf who moved the family to Atlanta. In 1976 Ellen graduated from Atlanta High School and entered the University of New Orleans. However, after the first semester she dropped out.
Ellen had had a lot of jobs. By 1981 she became an emcee in the Clyde's Comedy Club. Her talent made her popular and at the beginning of 1980s she won a competition which was sponsored by Showtime. She was often compared with Bob Newhart.
These were the early 80's when Ellen DeGeneres was voted the funniest person in America. It lead to her appearance on 'The Tonight Show' in 1986. At first she was not successful as an actress. By 1992 she had acted as a supporting player in a few comedies. Only in 1994 her sitcom 'These Friends of Mine' scored hit headlining. After the first season it was renamed 'Ellen'. In 1997 her show was canceled because of declining ratings. Moreover when she came out as a lesbian on her show some ABC's affiliates refused to air it and some sponsors withdrew the advertisements.
In 2001 she launched a new series on CBS, but it also was canceled because of poor ratings. Despite the fact a lot of doors were closed to her for a long time Ellen DeGeneres she managed to lend a few big screen roles.
Only in 2003 success came back to her thanks to the day time show named 'Ellen: The Ellen DeGeneres Show'. This Ellen's show turned out to be both a commercial success and a critical hit.
'Ellen: Ellen's DeGeneres Show' won 15 Emmy Awards. She also was a host of a number of awarding ceremonies including Oscar. As for her personal life, her first serious lover was Kathy Perkoff. But Kathy died in 1980.
In August 2008 she married Portia de Rossi. They live in perfectly decorated home in Beverly Hills, California. But the house on sale for $49M now. The same year she earned one more Daytime Emmy Award and became a spokes model for the popular Cover Girl cosmetics.
